8 Tips to Writing a Stellar Email Subject Line

A catchy subject line is crucial. More than 30% of email recipients decide whether or not to open an email based on subject line alone. Here are some tips to get a reader’s attention:

  1. Get to the point: Keep it brief. If there’s a discount somewhere in your email, consider making your subject like “25% Discount Inside.” Readers know exactly what they’re getting.
  2. Personalize it: Let your readers know that you know them. Use a name, location or special interest. People will be more likely to open if your email feels like a communication from a friend.
  3. Write the subject line first: Don't let the subject line be an afterthought.  But Amanda Augustine, career expert at professional job-matching service The subject line can be one of the most important parts of the campaign.  Write it first to set the tone of the email.
  4. Keep it short, but not too short: There's no real statistical link between subject line length and open rate, but especially for your mobile readers, shorter is better.  Try to use not more than 10 words.
  5. Use a familiar sender name: If the "from" name doesn’t sound familiar then the subject line doesn't matter.
  6. Don't use filler:  With such precious space, don't waste it with unnecessary words like "hi," "hello," and "thanks,".  Include those in the email's body.
  7. Make people feel special:  Lets face it.  Everyone likes to feel special.  The right phrasing can go a long way to increased open rates.  Try phrases like:
    • You're invited!
    • Exclusive offer for you
    • Private invite!
  8. Be funny or shocking: If you can make someone chuckle, they will be more willing to take a few moments and read your entire message. Alternatively, you’ll likely get the same result if you can make their jaws drop.
